There is no single answer that fits every home in Staunton, Waynesboro, or Fishersville, but there are four factors that decide most cases, and they are easy to work through once someone lays them out. The problem is that they usually get explained to you on the hottest day of the year by someone standing in your hallway, which is not when anyone makes good decisions about several thousand dollars.

Factor 1: How Old Is the System

Under 10 years, a repair almost always makes sense. The system has real life left and you would be discarding it. Past 12, the calculation inverts: every dollar goes into equipment near the end of its service life, and you will likely be having this same conversation again within a season or two.
If you do not know how old yours is, the data plate on the outdoor unit usually carries a manufacture date, and the serial number encodes one on most brands. Any technician can read it in a moment. It is worth knowing before you get a quote, because age is the factor that moves the answer most.
Factor 2: What Refrigerant Does It Use
This one catches people out, and it can decide the whole question on its own.
Systems built before roughly 2010 often run on R-22, which is no longer produced. What remains is reclaimed or previously stockpiled, and it is priced accordingly. A refrigerant leak on an R-22 system can cost more to recharge than the repair itself is worth, and you are paying that premium to refill a system that is already old.
Worth remembering that an air conditioner does not consume refrigerant. It is a sealed loop. If the charge is low, it leaked, and recharging without finding the leak means buying the same expensive refrigerant again next summer. On an R-22 system that is rarely money well spent.
If your system is on R-22 and the fault involves refrigerant, replacement is usually the smarter spend even when the unit is otherwise running.
Factor 3: The Repair Cost Against a New System
The common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about a third of a new system, replacement is the better value, particularly on an older unit.
It is a rule of thumb rather than a law, and it interacts with age. A repair worth a third of a new system on a six-year-old unit is usually still worth doing, because you are buying another decade. The same proportion on a thirteen-year-old unit is throwing good money after bad.

Factor 4: How Often Has It Broken Down

What is usually happening is that the system has passed the point where components start failing in sequence. The capacitor goes, then the contactor, then the fan motor. Each individual repair looks reasonable in isolation. Added together across two years they often exceed what a replacement would have cost, and you had an unreliable system throughout.

The Repairs That Change the Math

When the answer is repair, it is worth spending a moment on why the system got here, because the same conditions will age the replacement too.
