Why Is My AC Freezing Up?

Ice on the line in the middle of August seems backwards. Here is what causes it, what to do first, and when it needs a technician.

It is not as strange as it looks, and the cause is usually something small. Below is the full picture: what is happening at the coil, the four things that cause it, what to do in the next hour, and how to tell the cheap fix from the one that needs a technician.

What Is Actually Happening at the Coil

Your evaporator coil, the indoor one sitting in the air handler or above the furnace, is designed to run right around 40 degrees. Warm humid air from the house blows across it, the refrigerant inside absorbs that heat, and the moisture that condenses on the fins runs down into a drain pan and out. That condensation is normal and it is why your system has a drain line at all.

Now take the warm air away. The refrigerant keeps absorbing whatever heat it can find, but with far less air passing over the fins there is much less heat available. The coil temperature keeps dropping. Once it falls below freezing, the condensation stops draining and starts freezing in place instead.

From there it compounds. Ice on the fins blocks even more airflow, which makes the coil colder, which grows more ice. That feedback loop is why a system can go from slightly weak on Monday to a solid block of ice by Wednesday. It also explains why the problem seems to appear suddenly when the underlying cause has been building for weeks.

So every cause traces back to the same two questions: is enough air moving, and is the refrigerant charge correct?

Cause 1: Restricted Airflow (Most Common)

This is the answer more often than everything else combined, and the good news is that the most frequent version costs a few dollars to fix.

The air filter. A clogged filter strangles the air reaching the coil. Filters load up faster than people expect in the Shenandoah Valley, particularly during spring and fall pollen, in homes with pets, or when any remodeling has kicked up dust. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, that is very likely your whole problem. Replace it rather than vacuuming it and putting it back.

One thing that catches people out: a very high MERV filter can itself restrict airflow on a system that was not designed for it. If you upgraded to a thicker or higher-rated filter recently and the freezing started afterward, go back to the specification the manufacturer calls for. Better filtration is not automatically better for the equipment.

If the filter is clean, the restriction is somewhere else in the air path:

  • Closed or blocked supply vents. Closing vents in unused rooms feels efficient and is not. It raises static pressure across the whole duct system and cuts total airflow over the coil.
  • A blocked return. The return is where the system draws air in. A sofa, a bookcase, or a curtain in front of it starves the entire system no matter how clean the filter is.
  • A dirty evaporator coil. Over years, fine dust bypasses the filter and mats onto the fins until air cannot pass. This needs professional cleaning; the fins are thin aluminum and bend if you look at them wrong.
  • A weakening blower motor or capacitor. The fan sounds like it is running but is moving noticeably less air than it should.
  • Crushed, disconnected, or badly leaking ductwork. Common in crawlspaces and attics across Augusta County. A return duct that has come apart can pull hot attic air straight into the system.

That last one is worth taking seriously, and it is an area where we can do something most contractors cannot. Callison fabricates ductwork in our own Staunton shop, so when a duct problem is behind a freeze-up we build the correct fix rather than forcing an off-the-shelf fitting to work.

Cause 2: Low Refrigerant

If airflow genuinely checks out, the next suspect is the refrigerant charge, and there is an important thing to understand here.

Your air conditioner does not consume refrigerant. It is a sealed loop, the same charge circulating for the life of the system. So if the charge is low, it leaked out somewhere. Adding more without finding the leak means paying to fill the same hole again next summer, and often the summer after that.

Low charge lowers the pressure inside the evaporator coil, and lower pressure means a lower boiling point, which drops the coil temperature below freezing even when airflow is perfectly fine.

Signs that point to refrigerant rather than airflow:

  • Ice forms on the larger insulated copper line outside at the condenser, not only at the indoor coil
  • A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit or the line set
  • Cooling performance has declined gradually across an entire season rather than failing over a few days
  • The filter is genuinely clean and the vents are genuinely open
  • The system runs continuously and never reaches the thermostat setting even overnight
  • An oily residue near a fitting or a service valve, which is often where a slow leak shows itself

Refrigerant work requires EPA certification and proper recovery equipment, so this is not a homeowner repair. More to the point, the leak search matters more than the recharge. A technician who tops it off and leaves without looking for the source has sold you a few months.

Cause 3: Running It When It Is Too Cool Outside

A smaller cause, but a real one, and it catches people in spring and early fall rather than mid-summer.

Most residential air conditioners are not designed to operate when the outdoor temperature drops below roughly 60 degrees. Below that, the pressures on the low side fall outside the range the system was engineered for, and the coil can freeze even though every component is working exactly as intended.

This shows up on cool Valley evenings in May or September when someone leaves the system running overnight after a warm afternoon. If your freeze-up happened on a cool night rather than during a hot stretch, that may be the entire explanation, and the fix is simply not running cooling when it is that cool out.

What to Do Right Now

Before diagnosing anything, stop the freeze from getting worse and get the ice off. Work through these in order.

  1. Turn cooling off at the thermostat. Switch the system from COOL to OFF.
  2. Set the fan to ON. Running the blower without the compressor pushes warm indoor air across the coil and melts the ice far faster than simply shutting everything down. This is the step most people skip.
  3. Put towels down. A fully frozen coil holds a surprising amount of water, and the drain pan may not cope with all of it arriving at once.
  4. Wait it out. Light frost may clear in an hour. A solid block can take three to six hours or longer. Do not rush it.
  5. Change the filter while you wait. If it is dirty, you may have just fixed the problem.
  6. Walk the house. Open any closed supply vents and clear anything sitting in front of a return.
  7. Do not chip at the ice. The coil and its fins are thin aluminum. A screwdriver turns a cheap problem into a refrigerant leak in about two seconds.

Once it is fully thawed, switch back to COOL and watch it closely. If it freezes again within a day, the underlying cause is still there and guessing further is not worth your time.

What It Costs You to Keep Running It Frozen

This is the part worth being blunt about, because the temptation on a 95-degree day in Stuarts Draft or Verona is to keep the system limping along until someone can get out.

When the coil is iced over, refrigerant that should have fully boiled into vapor comes back to the compressor still liquid. Compressors are built to compress vapor. Liquid does not compress, and the result is called slugging: it hammers the valves and bearings and it is one of the most reliable ways to kill a compressor.

A compressor replacement is not a small repair. On many systems it approaches the cost of replacing the whole outdoor unit, which is why the honest advice at that point often becomes a conversation about replacement rather than repair. All of that comes from running a system for a few extra days with ice on the coil.

There is a second cost that is easier to ignore. A frozen system is running constantly while delivering almost no cooling, so you are paying peak summer electricity rates for very little. Change the filter, open the vents, thaw it completely, and run it again. Any of the following means it is time for a technician rather than another round of guessing:

  • It freezes again after a filter change and a full thaw
  • There is ice on the copper lines out at the outdoor unit
  • You hear hissing or bubbling near the indoor unit
  • Water is overflowing the drain pan or you see staining on the ceiling below
  • The system runs constantly and never satisfies the thermostat
  • Cooling had been slipping for weeks before the freeze appeared
  • The system is more than about twelve years old and this is not the first problem this season

A proper diagnosis measures airflow and checks refrigerant pressures rather than choosing between them by guesswork.
